Brazilian Deiveson Figueiredo beat American Joseph Benavidez by a technical submission in the very first round to win the UFC flyweight title on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
The 32- year-old documented 3 knockdowns before a rear naked choke ended Benavidez’s night after 4 minutes and 48 seconds of the fight – the primary contest of the latest UFC ‘Fight Island’.
” I’m the guy that everybody wishes to beat and I’m the guy everyone is taking a look at,” stated Figueiredo.
The contest was thrown into jeopardy last week when Figueiredo produced a favorable outcome for Covid-19, however subsequent tests came out unfavorable.
Asked if he thought the battle must be rescheduled, he stated: “I’m a guy who doesn’t quit, ever. I needed to get rid of those difficulties to get here. This is something I had to do.”
Somewhere else, British lightweight fighter Marc Diakiese lost by an unanimous choice of 30-2729-2829-28 to Kazakhstan’s Rafael Fiziev. Both males were offered $50,000 each after their contest was declared Fight of the Night.
Afterwards, the 27- year-old – nicknamed “Bonecrusher”, tweeted: “Sometimes adequate isn’t enough, I’ll be back. I can do so much better.”
Irish fighter Joe Duffy revealed his retirement from Mixed Martial Arts after his first-round submission defeat by Spaniard Joel Alvarez. It was the 32- year-old’s third straight loss.
” I believe it’s time to realise that I have not got what it takes any more,” Duffy, who ends with a 16 -5 record, published on social networks.
Wales’ Brett Johns beat American Montel Jackson by consentaneous choice – 29-2829-2829-28 – in the bantamweight classification.
England’s Nad Narimani was beaten by American Grant Dawson by consentaneous choice in their catchweight (150 pounds) contest.
The 33- year-old from Bristol was dominated by Dawson for much of the contest with the judges scoring it 30-2630-2729-27
This was the second of the 4 UFC Battle Island contests to be held at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
